Escape has always been a pretty reasonable place to go for a late night drink and a dance. It used to stand above the rest of Oxfords slightly lame selection of clubs but on recent evidance it really needs to raise it's game!
I went last week and was immediately disappointed to discover that one of the two floors was closed necessitating fighting your way across the dance floor to get to a fire escape that led to the loos.
Closing off one floor meant the only music available was the grinding "R&B" which most British folk simply cannot dance to and the DJ's lack of ability to play what people wanted to hear meant there were only a few brave souls occupying the floor.
Add to that a hugely overzealous bouncer threatening harm to anyone who ventured near the pole in the corner and immediately one of the reasons for going (dancing!) is taken away.
So it's off to the bar, a bar that on either end has young ladies in hotpants dancing half heartedly and in the middle a barman that will not let you drink from a glass or a bottle - presumably in case you develop some kind of psychosis and decide to slash other patrons.
There is something destinctly crappy about drinking from a plastic glass in a club - especially if it's a cocktail!! It's like buying a ticket to see England play and then realising it's the under 10's side!
All in all, this once fun place is slowly becoming the sort of dive you find in small rural towns where there is no other option. It could be saved - give us a choice of music! give us glas glasses to drink out of! Tone down the aggro bouncers!
Lose the dancing girls and teach the DJ to read a dancefloor. Not everyone in the world is a drooling neanderthal who will bottle people at the slightest provocation so perhaps start to treat your customers with a modicum of respect and you might find they'll come flooding back!
Always have a fab time everytime i go out here! I dance the ngiht away with my friends and theres always something on for everyone.
