A contemporary style bar in the centre of town, Copa provides a continental setting for a comfortable drink or two.

The Venue
Copa is a modern central bar advertising ‘Continental Biers’ (in an oddly spelled English-German hybrid) on the outside. It has a black facade with gold writing and the front windows are opened up in the summer. Inside it’s all creams and dark browns and the overall feel is cool and contemporary with highly polished floorboards and a wooden bar on the right.

Massive grey lampshades hang over the bar and there’s an elevated section at the back with sofas and armchairs, exposed brickwork and a large, ornate gold-framed mirror and red and green angled spotlights. The upstairs mezzanine area is lighter with views down on to George Street as well as on to the bar down below. The carpet has a brown swirling pattern and the wood panelling is painted cream.

The People
Copa is half way between the shabby chic of studentville and the upmarket climes of posh Oxford. As such it attracts a mid-range market of young and slightly older professionals, as well as families and students accompanied by their parents and shoppers who find themselves in this part of town on a Saturday afternoon.

The Food and Drink
If you’re hungry there are breakfasts, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and salads. Prices aren’t cheap in this part of town and a chicken sandwich will set you back around £5.45, or it’s £6.95 for a steak and ale pie.

There is indeed a good range of continental ‘biers’ on draught including Foster’s, Stella, Kronenbourg, Strongbow, Greene King IPA, Guinness, Amstel and Heineken, which is the cheapest at £3.35 a pint. And in bottles there’s Erdinger Weiss, Leffe, Stella, Corona, Beck’s, Sagres Pilsner Urquell, San Miguel and Staropramen. There are ten or so bottles each of red and white wines ranging between £11 and £15 — and you can get a bottle of Prosecco for £16.95.

The Last Word
A smart, continental style bar in the city centre, Copa serves its mid-range customers pretty well with food and a good range of beers.
