The ViewOxford Review
Eurobar - Eurotrash? The similarity is just too tempting. This is a refuge for weary coach travellers and those just weary of life.
The Venue
Eurobar - just how bad is that name? Yes, it’s a travesty. Unfortunately the place itself - a bar and hotel - doesn’t do much to dispel first impressions. It’s basically a stop-off point for people coming and going by coach from Oxford as it’s right on the doorstep of the National Express depot and we all know that areas around coach stations leave a lot to be desired. It’s got two entrances, one on the station side and one on a lower level on the George Street side.
The station part is more like a European style cafe while the room on the lower level is more like a pub and has a big screen. It has red walls and black vinyl banquettes, a high ceiling and a stone floor. All in all it’s a pretty sorry affair whose business is supported by its guests and stray, tired, thirsty and hungry travellers.
The People
Tall, bearded Scandinavians with wheelie bags, small tanned French girls struggling with bulging sports bags and thin and pale lone vacant-eyed travellers slumped on sofas sipping a beer or trying to revive themselves with a coffee. It does attract a few sports fans too.
The Food and Drink
The range of drinks on tap includes Strongbow, Boddington’s, Guinness, Peeterman’s, Stella Artois, Beck’s, Castlemaine XXXX, Leffe, Hoegaarden and Staropramen. While in bottles you’ve got Magner’s, Stella, Corona, Budweiser, Carling and Beck’s. The food is cafe style sandwiches and pastries - a pre-packaged sarnie will cost you about £1.65 and a pizza slice is £1.75.
The Last Word
Station bars are never that salubrious (unless you’re at St Pancras) and Eurobar in no exception. Great cheesy name though and if you’re a tired traveller sighting the silver Eurobar sign might be akin to finding the Holy Grail.
