This must be one of my favourite pubs now. I wouldn't go near it before but some time in march 2009 it got a new landlord and became a lot friendlier. there are no fights now and the drug problem has disappeared thankfully. The cool thing is they are always putting something on like Xmas markets and summer BBQ. South Africa day is a real treat with tons of people in the big garden. Not many pubs still have fire places in Oxford either but this one still has three! At least one will be burning.
I guess I could take this opportunity to say thanks to the Landlord for putting in all the effort. Thanks Lance
I have eaten here several times, including a Xmas dinner which was as good as my Nan could make, all the food i have had has been exceptionally good, all home cooked and very generous portions, And the Burger rocks, they also have a good selection of cheap shots and reasonably priced beers and spirit, oh and the rock night on Fridays is awesome.
I recommend this Pub to everyone, whatever your needs.

Warm atmosphere and loads of fun especially when somethings organized like a band or barbecue or an event, even had Bill Bailey there this last year, how cool is that. The food? South African food is to die for and the chips are tasty and humongous.
thanks Lance, Helen and the team
seriously great pub now!
Honest food, good service and a really enjoyable atmospehere.
A thumbs up from me for a good evening!
The James street Tavern has just changed landlord 21st March 2009 and is now run by Lance Cowan, the image is no longer playing pool and football but now has tables for good food and lovely photographic pictures on the wall, the back has a load of new plants and has been cleaned up to enjoy a lazy sunny mood with barbeque's for the summer
