We stayed here last year and returned not realizing that it had changed hands. The room had been left as a family room when we arrived and we had to ask them to put it back to a sofa as there was only two of us. We had specifically requested Room 3 as it was away from the main building. It smelt very damp and musty as we walked in and there we no towels. The bathroom wasn't as clean as it could have been (someone's toenail was on the floor next to the shower!)The hairdryer that was fixed to the bathroom wall was dangerous to say the least. The hose was broken in several places showing wire which got very hot if you tried to use it. There were broken tiles in the shower, no light in the close up mirror, light over the sink broken and no toilet roll holder. The next morning we got up very early to get down to breakfast (it finishes at 8.15 on a saturday!!). It was advertised as 'light continental' Warm croissant - ok. Toast - awful, bread tasted like it had been laid on a bleached surface or something. Tea - awful, water tasted like it was from an outside water can and not clean. We upped and left pretty quickly. We went back to bed!!That evening we tried to get an early night but the bar staff (who incidentally we think had been drinking all day) decided to sit outside out back door smoking and drinking till at 12.30 I had to ask them to keep the noise down. I got a little abuse before the lady owner called them inside.Needless to say, we are not going back there again. For a fiver more, we could have stayed in a proper hotel with a full english breakfast.

um not a majority representation of this hostelry, I had stayed in room 3 as it is the largest of the accommodation block, as it backs onto the river which runs underneath you are invariably going to smell water, it is a riverside pub, unfortunately too many people want a guest house or hotel, this little place is neither, it is a pub which has accommodation attatched and invariably at the weekend pubs can get a little noisy I think whwen I read the website it does state this, as for cleanliness I have never had a problem before like this here in fact it has always been very clean & tidy with really approachable staff, albeit a little different looking than most. The value for money is exceptional especially in the present climate where most food off the main menu is under a tenner, and as a regular visitor can vouch for the quality. I suspect these people expect 5* quality paying minmal prices, The plough is one of the cheapest in the area and one of the best. They now have a continental breakfast situated in the rooms so people can have breakfast when they want to, a godsend when like me you need something before an early checkout. As for the owners wishing to drink all day again find this a little odd as the landlord doesn't drink at all and landlady drinks very minimally, I think the only times they have a drink is when they have an evening off when they retire to their private accommodation with a hard earned bottle of wine. I suppose you can't please all of the people all of the time and some people you are never going to please and if they can afford 5* then they should take all of their pretentiosness and stay in 5* hotels and leae our little english inns well alone, I suspect this person didn't even drink in the pub and obviously felt far to superior for that. If there were more pubs like this one I for one would be a happy bunny as it is one of the cheapest, cleanest, best value for money and most welcoming in the whole county and I am not alone in this se - Report

My comments here are from my experience. I believe my opinion is as worthy as the next and that I paint a true picture for fellow travellers.

If you read my post, you will see that I didn't say the owners were drinking all day, I suggested the bar staff were.

The whole point of this website is to offer an opinion. This was mine and I stick to it. - Report
