This is a confusing place - not a pub and not really a restaurant. Asked for a J2O but they had not heard of it - only the second most popular soft drink in the country!!
Waitress arrived with cokes - managed to spill one down us!
Service poor - staff didn't seem bothered about the customers and didn't seem to be able to work the tills.
Food variable - definitely don't choose anything vegetarian. After ordering it and leaving most of it the waitress remarked - well I personally wouldn't have ordered it. Say no more!
Most customers seemed to complain about something.
Food strange - Sunday roast built as a tower. Why??
Sauces (Jus) so strong you can't taste anything else.
Like others - wouldn't visit again.
Be careful: You might get ripped off! When I paid Mastercard a gratuity of 10% was added (without asking) and the waitress cleverly managed to hide this fact until I had pushed the green button and handed over another 10% tip in CASH! I was barely able to get the receipt from here (almost 200 BP!) just to find out that I had just paid a 20% tip for a so-so service. When I looked out for the waitress to get at least my cash-tip back she had miracelousely disappeared. A never-again experience in a tourist trap from my point of view. Steak cold, burgers so-so, pasta ok. Shame! All my other restaurant visits (Zizi, Bangkok house etc) were most enjoyable! Oxford's a great place to visit. Red Lion not so much. Regards from Germany!
I am quite surprised to read these reviews.
As a pub has been transformed completely, and the food is quite nice and reasonable prices, but I would never go there again only for one reason. The last two times, I was there, one of the bouncers, (speaking very basic English, looks like Eastern Europe), had quite an offensive argument with one of my friend. He looked half drank. I thought it is not allowed for the bouncers to drink...but you will see him almost drank any time you would go there. A second time I heard he had a fight with another of our friends only because he said "Hi " to his girlfriend......He usually works on Weekends, so make sure don't go there on weekends, if you want just a quite night out......
Great pub , good location they have local ales on tap and some decent food , if you feel adventurous they have specials daily we tried the coffee Pork dish , fantastic is a understatement. Great selection of wines , attentive staff all in all top , marks from us!
The Red Lion has been transformed totally and has been renovated to the highest standards! Fresh British food with a twist is served daily and service and staff are fantastic. They also have a stunning garden for dining and drinks.
handy little pub, nice people and nice customers too.
