The ViewOxford Review
A mix of street cred and cool decor, Sugar Brown is a soulfully sweet venue.
The Venue
Right next to superbar Raoul’s is Sugar Brown which is another cocktail bar with a smooth, sweet finish. There’s a cool little terrace outside with three metal tables and chairs and the bar itself looks pretty petite, but hides the fact that there’s a lower level space beyond it. There’s a big mirror along the left hand wall and a brown banquette and exposed brickwork on the right, as well as spotlights in the brown ceiling.
It’s all browns and creams with a dark floor and Rothkoesque colourfield-style paintings on the walls. The bar itself is straight ahead and has a wooden top and there are plant pots and candles on the ledges. Elsewhere are tiny shiny black lampshades, funky Aztec stripes down the walls and low, dark beige and stripy brown sofas, as well as beige chairs with silver legs.
The People
Cool black guys and sexy white chicks mingle and clink glasses here alongside city slickers and slightly more funky students who are fed up of ‘student’ bars and seek something a little more grown up.
The Food and Drink
You’ve got Peroni on draught and Sol, Grolsch, San Miguel and Stella in bottles. The cocktail list is strong and includes blends like Bramble, Ginger Collins, Indian Summer, Vespa Martini, Chocolate Martini and Sugar Daddy — all for around £5.50/£6. On the wine list there are five whites and five reds. A bottle of that classic Veneto sparkler Bisol Prosecco is a good call at £16.50 a bottle. Happy hour is from 4pm to 7pm.
The Last Word
There’s an easy going vibe at Sugar Brown which is quite intoxicating — even before your first mojito.
