The ViewOxford Review
The Brickworks is a friendly, independently run little pub with a cool underground vibe.
The Venue
The Brickworks is a cool, intimate and friendly little bar a couple of doors down from The Carling Academy which has brought a lot of life into Cowley Road since it opened (and stolen much of the thunder from the city centre in the process). This narrow red brick building houses a small front bar, an underground bar and a beer patio out the back.
The front part is done out in red, blacks and creams and wooden floorboards. The downstairs area is a fantastically cool little hang-out with a black and white tiled floor and a low beamed ceiling with angled spotlights. It has purple walls with orange inlaid tiling as well as exposed brickwork. It’s got its own small bar too and it’s pretty atmospheric. It’s also used as a private function room and has played host to the impressive talents of The Ting Tings, Editors and Happy Mondays.
The People
It doesn’t really get that busy until 9.30pm and The Brickworks is known as one of the best places to come, chill or party, after a gig at The Academy, so you get a lot of music fans, as well as young guys in bands and their devoted followers. It gets packed at weekends and is a favourite with students in the know.
The Food and Drink
On tap there’s San Miguel, Beck’s, Foster’s, Strongbow, London Pride, Spitfire, Tiger, Corona, Peroni and Bulmer’s. To eat there’s what’s widely considered to be the best fry-up in Oxford which consists of eggs, hash browns, black pudding, bacon and mushroom - all for £5.95. As well as that you can get toasted sandwiches for £4.50. All ingredients come from small local suppliers.
The Last Word
The Brickworks is a bar that’s very easy to like, and even in time, to love.
