The ViewOxford Review
Located in the Plain, The Cape of Good Hope is a charming pub where you can have a drink with friends after a boring day of work.
The Venue
Located in the nicely placed the Plain, you can arrive at the Cape of Good Hope by bus or by walking if you come from the city centre, and the same thing for those who lived in Cowley. This is a nice area, close to the bridge, where there are many other bars and restaurants. The Cape of Good Hope is big, and nice, and is crowded most of the time so you're lucky if you can get to the sofas with cosy cushions. If not, the chairs and benches are comfy enough.
It's a bit dark but don't be afraid you'll still be able to see who's sitting in front of you. Staff are young and efficient and you don't have to wait a long time at the bar so your partner won't feel abandoned back at the table.
The terrace is reserved for the smokers and it's extremely beautiful although sometimes you run the risk of getting trapped outside. Just ask the people inside to open the door, at least it gives you an excuse to flirt.
The People
The pub has a relaxed atmosphere and it's more of a wine bar than a beer swilling den. It's a former It's A Scream student chain pub and it's still a popular place with undergraduates but they're not so dominant now and the crowd is made up of mostly young professionals who are here to drown their 9 to 5 sorrows. Some days, mostly Sundays, they have live jazz
The Food and Drink
As a typical pub there's a good selection of English food, in particular roasts. Served until 10pm, you can have a reasonably priced meal of heaped proportions.
The Cape of Good Hope is a good place to meet with friends or your partner because of its relaxing atmosphere and a fine variety of beers and wines. If you prefer drinking wine they do a special offer with Mondays grape @ the Cape.
The Last Word
Strategically located, this pub is a great place to share a bottle of wine with your friends, have a chat, and forget the stresses of life.
