The Perch has such a wonderful setting, it's a pity that the service is so bad.

We arrived there at 12:00 on a January day, and told them that we would like to have a pint or two and then some lunch. We were told that we would have to have our pints in the garden (ok, in a big marquee), and come in when we wanted to eat. We couldn't sit at a table to drink our pints as the tables (all empty, they had only just opened) were reserved for diners.

So we sat there drinking for a while, and then came in to take our table for lunch. But we were told that we could not do that, all the tables were now booked (though two thirds of them were still empty). So we had to leave without lunch.

I shan't be going back.

What a disappointment. My wife and I arrived for lunch and were shown to the terrace and given dinner menus. On enquiry the foreign waiter informed us that there is no separate lunch menu but lunch could be selected from a very rare (blue) beef salad, roasted Camembert or club sandwich. I asked if there was any other choice for a light meal: a burger for example. Apparently not available during the week. I ordered a club sandwich and my wife asked if the Salad Niçoise was also available as a main course as well as a starter. The food arrived within a short time and my wife’s salad was small but quite acceptable. The club sandwich however was more like a McDonald’s breakfast bun with a fried egg, a diminutive rasher of bacon, a sprig of lettuce and a shred of chicken all present in a double sliced floured bap. Oh, and the fries were from frozen – just like authentic McDonald’s. To add a rustic touch, it was served on a lump of wood. After the meal I asked for the bill but the Salad Niçoise quantity was indicated with x2 and the price was £13.90. The waiter confirmed that as a main course the price was doubled. I asked him to check if that was correct. A supervisor came to the table and confirmed that as the quantity of ingredients in the dish was doubled, so was the price. I pointed out that a guest on a neighbouring table had also ordered the Salad Niçoise which was very similar in size to my wife’s. The supervisor did not agree, but as both dishes had already been consumed there was nothing to compare. Although he apologised that the waiter should have confirmed with us that the price would be doubled for a main course, he said that the double price was justified as there was double the quantity. He did not take my point that the effort in preparation was certainly not double, nor was the waiter’s effort in carrying the dish to the table more strenuous. Sadly the only discount he could offer us was a 10% reduction on the salad or a complimentary coffee.

Awful place for cyclists.

They don't have anywhere safe for you to lock up a bicycle, and they throw you out if you try to lock your bikes up in their garden so you can ensure they aren't being stolen.

The foreign staff member who advised us of this ridiculous policy was rude and stuck up, so I won't be going there again. They lost out on 3 people who were planning on eating and drinking a great deal.

Sadly they don't seem to realise that being in the middle of nowhere and not allowing bikes in to their garden cuts their market phenomenally.

Went to The Perch last friday with my husband, expecting a lovely meal, how disappointed we were. The meal we had was poor, the portions miserly, and the drinks were very expensive. A nasty dinning experience. The staff were the only value for money.

A great big thank you to The Perch staff. We organised a surprise 40th wedding anniversary for our parents and all the staff were so helpful and kind, attending to all of our requirements.
Thanks to you all and see you very soon!

I visited the perch last Sunday (28th March) with 3 friends and enjoyed a truely magical experience. From the moment we entered the building we were treated to a genuinley warm welcome by the friendly and well presented staff. The decor and ambience was amazing and was commented on by all of our party!
The Manager was very helpful and talked us through the menus that were avaliable, either a lighter snacks menu, a full restaurant menu and a sunday roast..beef or chicken.
Being it was sunday, we all decided on the roast and were taken to our table in the delightful restaurant. We decided on 2 chicken and 2 beef. Our waiter described them in a very knowledgable and descriptive manner..and we were certainly not let down when the meals (promptly) arrived. Delicious!!
The waiter recommended our wines, to our specific tastes, from the new updated wine menu, and again we were delighted with his recommendations.
What was going to be a quick lunch turned into a wonderful and relaxing afternoon with great food and wine in beautiful surroundings.
We'll be back!!
