This pub-restaurant has an exceptional location by the river and is far enough out of Oxford to feel like you are in the countryside. As long as you go at the right time the Trout will provide a pleasant dining experience.

The Venue
Situated in the village of Wolvercote, about three miles from the centre of Oxford, the Trout has a superb location and a large and delightfully picturesque riverside terrace. Extensively refurbished a few months ago, the interior has an upmarket Ikea feel to it which many may find pleasing.

The People
Expect to find anyone and everyone in this most summery of pubs. The riverside location means that vast crowds of people descend on the Trout on a summer’s day and sometimes the staff and kitchen just can't cope. The atmosphere is lively and bustling.

If you are looking for a quiet pint by the river this is not the place to get it, but if you don't mind the crowds, it's a pleasant place to be. There are signs up to inform clientele that football shirts and bare-chested men will not be tolerated and there are certain parts of the terrace where you can't smoke. It's clear that the management are trying to attract a more "upmarket crowd" and this is reflected in the prices - expect to pay upwards of £25 for three courses before you have had anything to drink.

The Food
The menu definitely looks "gastropub" with offerings such as swordfish steak and salmon served with a wasabi mash. The more traditional offerings are there as well with steaks, burgers and fish and chips available albeit with a slight foodie twist. The St Louis ribs are moist, tangy and delicious and the range of homemade pizzas is creative and well executed.

The Drink
An excellent selection of draught beers from all over Europe, with Belgium heavily featured, is complemented by a thoughtful and varied winelist with several draught wines. The usual array of soft drinks mean there is something for everyone.

The Last Word
A real Jekyll and Hyde of a pub. At its best it's a great place to eat with a well thought out menu and great surroundings. At its worst it's an overpriced rugby scrum where you will struggle to have a good meal.
