Maybe I am lucky, but I have always found The Trout excellent, with good beer, and good food well served. In my view, this is the ideal gastropub, unlike some others which copy its prices but offer worse food and much worse service,
Was slightly put off by reviews on this site, but went anyway on various recommendations by friends, and had a fantastic time. Service was excellent - polite, friendly & attentive waiting staff, quick service - and delicious food. Not cheap but certainly good value for what you get, and in such a beautiful setting.
Today my colleagues and I went to The Trout for a celebratory meal. We were really looking forward to what we supposed would be an enjoyable outing. However, once through the doors our hopes were soon dashed by surly waiters and very poor service. The pub was not busy, yet it took over two hours for our two courses to be served. Items were forgotten and the general attitude from the staff was quite blase.
However, that was nothing compared to the fact that when the main courses finally arrived two of the dishes had pieces of packaging in them. One of which I wish I’d taken a picture of as it was huge - almost all of the packaging of some pre-made sauce. Which apart from disgusting also leads one to question how well made and fresh the dishes are. To top it all off, at no point did the staff seem truly concerned by the fact that two of the dishes had food packaging in them. One even joked, upon finding the first piece of packaging, ‘let’s hope there isn’t any in the other dishes!’. The whole experience rather marred our celebrations and I would never recommend The Trout, under it’s present management, to anybody ever again.
I think it’s a shame that such a lovely pub has become so complacent about its customers and is happy to trade off its name alone.
Poor service, ordinary food, but a good location for a drink.
My wife and I took her parents to see our son who lives in Oxford,
we visited the Trout which is undoubtedly in a very lovely location but on entering the building we were told rather rudely by a female with a foreign accent that we "could not sit at these tables, go and sit up there" and dismissed with a wave of the hand as she walked away.
We found a table near the bar and eventually managed to get a few drinks and a coffee.
There were only 2 male barstaff at a very busy time to serve a bar full of people. The coffee took a long time to make and when we got the milk jug to the table we noticed it was filthy inside.
We returned it to the bar and pointed this out and were just told,"oh yes, that shouldn't be like that" with no apology by the Polish barstaff.
They had no slimline tonic and again the glass the tonic came in was dirty. I do not like even giving a 1 star.
We had hoped to have a meal there but we left and found a wonderful place at Yarnton called The Turnpike with lovely food, a comfortable atmosphere and very curtious and helpful staff which I would highly recommend
Had a delightful meal with my wife at the Trout Inn. Staff were plesant and polite and the food was exquiste. I will definatley be returning soon!
