Dear Hamish,

What a great night Wednesday was.
You presented a great, fun quiz to raise money for a great cause.
It was superb to see the winning team donate their prize money to
to the charity too.
The "spur-of-the-moment" collection was amazing, raising an extra £100!
The comlepmentary bowls of chips, the log fire, the friendly locals and excellent bar staff really made it the place to be.
We're definately looking forward to the next one!
The Amber Phillpot Trust is a great cause and should be supported.

Thanks very much. Keep up the good work.

Having been sad to loose our village pub I was so pleased when it reopened. Its taken a couple of weeks to go try the food having been in OZ for a month but went last night 30/01/12 and have to say the wait was worth it. I had the springbok stew and my best friend had liver and bacon. The food was so tender and tasty and was so suprised with the prices very good value especially as two people could of eaten the liver dish. Keep up the good work...now where do I book for Sunday!!!!! Claire

I came across this review page purely by accident, and was pleased to read (most) of the reviews for the Waggon & Horses in Culham (one of my favourite places to eat), so I thought I would add my tuppence worth!

I have found the Waggon & Horses to be an excellent venue for Sunday Lunch (anything that gets me out of the kitchen!!). The quality of the food and the level of service are of the highest standard.

Mine Host, Hamish, and his very able staff are most attentive and obliging, nothing is too much trouble.

So may I suggest that if you are looking for a new place to eat, or even looking for a new place to drink, the Waggon & Horses should be at the top of your list, and you can be sure of a warm welcome.

I wish Hamish and his staff all the very best for the future - keep up the good work.

Dear SirI am a frequent visitor to Abingdon and someone who has actually eaten at your friendly establishment several times since the re-opening. I have always found your Sunday Carvery to be excellent, plentiful, served with lovely fresh vegetables and to be good value for money. So good, in fact, I would strongly recommend to anyone to book a table due to it's immense popularity.I would further add that I think it is highly commendable that in these unfavourable economic times (where the UK newspapers report that one hundred pubs are closing each month!) we still have enterprising people in this country, such as yourself. I wish you every success in your new venture and gladly add my full name and title to this review.Mrs Gill Edwards, BA, Inst of HospitalityManaging DirectorLodestar Catering Services

Dearest Villagarian,
Having lived in Culham all of my life, and seen the Waggon and Horses go through many Landlords and Managers, i really was pained when the pub closed in May 2011, so imagine my joy having it reopened in December, Some new and some old staff, different menu and a family trying to bring life back into a village that has been dieing on its feet. OK so there may have been some teething problems, but with the local authority giving them 4 stars in thee scores on the doors scheme, something must be right. However on Sunday 15 Jan, when our family where having lunch, the restaurant was packed and buzzing with complimentary conversation, children laughing and all the other things you would expect in a pub with a lunchtime carvery, choice of meat was plentiful, i had 2 of the 3 on offer, and vegetables where there for the taking. If gluten is an issue for you, then don't have the gravy !
With 40+ pubs closed in oxfordshire in the last year, i and many others in this tiny forgotten village cheer, Mr Forsyth, his family and his team, for all the hard work in revitalising such an essential village asset.
Go on Villagarian, give it a second chance, and then you can write a positive review

Yours
Longtime living

Hamish

we would love to say how great it was to see the Wagon so busy on Sunday - I am glad we reserved in advance and will do so every week from now on. It is good to see the place so busy as traditionally January can be a very quiet month for pubs.
Keep up the good work

SO GLAD THE WAGGON AND HORSES HAD RE-OPENED! where do i start....?the place looks so much better, the staff are polite, and the food is superb!at first i was hesitant to even go to the waggon and horses, as its history of food, appearance and ownership has been the worst. as food was serves cold, over cooked and staff were rude. i was invited by a friend to go to the waggon for lunch. she told me there was a new landlord and landlady running the pub, i was still hesitant to what i have seen in the past, but from the momentum from my friend, i went for a lunch with her there.to my suprise the place looked so much cleaner, and spacious, it def looked comfy and healthy! i ordered a sirlion steak, and my friend ordered a limb shank, the appearance of the dish looked high class and the prices are fab as my friend and i are both uni students. we had a lovely convosation with the owners of the pub, they were a lovely humorous couple to which made us feel VERY welcome. not only the owners but the staff reflected a warm and friendly atmosphere. i have been back alot now, might even call me a local now. as i am a big fan!

The Waggon and Horses is now under new management and welcomes all true reviews of the business. Anyone unhappy with the service or meal is encouraged to speak to me or my staff so that we may rectify any problems.

A big thank you to all those who posted reviews whilst the site still reflected the old Waggon and Horses, but this is a new beginning and a new review.

Once again thank you for your custom and your help in getting the Waggon and Horses open and trading.

Kind regards

Hamish

Dear Landlord, great carvery on sunday. I was impressed that, although busy, you still made time to pop over to greet diners at their tables. Spot on! I just read about your customer who has celiac issues. It seems a bit far fetched in all honesty. Mind you, is quite far away.

I took my family to The Waggon for lunch on Sunday as it was my wifes Birthday - I must say it was a bit of a disaster from start to finish - we told the Manager that my wife was a Celiac and to be careful what ingredients he used - he looked at us rather odly and we later found out why as my wife became very ill when we got home - we used to go there in 2010 when it was the old management and Sunday Lunch was super - with a choice of meats ( you could have all the meats if you wanted ) and superb vegetables - however it was very quiet and you could easily see why - I really dont think we will be going back for a while which is a pity as we have just moved back to live in Culham - I do hope it gets better as it will be closed again soon

Dear Villagerian

I am sad to hear you had a bad experience. I do not recall anyone talking to me about being a Celiac or a birthday. We were a little busy on Sunday as you must well know, so I apologize. Could you please tell me what time you came in and I will speak to my staff, or even better come in and see me in person so that we can remedy any further problems, as we generally cater for most, especially on our Sunday carvery.

Regards

Hamish

Dear Villagerian

I have spoken to my staff and my Chef. No one remembers being approached by anyone stating they had a birthday or about being a Celiac.
Firstly you claim you asked the manager to prepare the food with special ingredients, on a Sunday we only serve a carvery, thus everything is prepared in advance. If you had questions about the food, I would expect you would ask the Chef stood in front of you serving the food. We have several customers that have identified that they are Celiac and we have separate gravy just for them. Besides the meat, to which you can have as much as you choose, which is served by our Chef, the rest of the food and veg is on a help yourself basis, thus I would not expect a Celiac to help themselves to something they cannot eat.
Secondly you claim that we were very quiet. I think the other 110 people that ate with us on Sunday may disagree as we sold out by 15H30.

As you are not prepared to identify yourself I would question if you actually attended lunch on Sunday in Culham or if indeed you are sat in Thailand.

If you wish to resolve any of your obvious misrepresentations, please come in and speak to either myself or our Chef and I will be happy resolve any concerns you may have.

Regards

Hamish

Not sure which pub you were in on sunday but reading some of your comments I don't think you were sitting in same pub as me - I have been there with friends and family most Sundays and ther is never a problem eating all the meats - They do 3 roasts and you can have some of each which my friends do - I also think if there is a problem on the day it would be good manners to talk to the Manager or Chef before leaving. If they do not know there is a problem then they cannot fix it - It would be alot more advantageous to everyone rather than just slagging them off on review sites and harping back to the past - I think Hamish and his staff are doing a fantastic job and they should be applauded.
