The ViewOxford Review
A fairly uninspiring restaurant where quantity seems more important than quality. Dull yet vaguely authentic Greek food at a reasonable price.
The Venue
Hidden away at the far end of South Parade in Summertown, a short bus ride from Central Oxford, the Greek Taverna is situated within easy walking distance of Summertowns pubs and bars.
Parking is plentiful thanks to a large pay and display car park nearby. The restaurant itself is large and open plan, decorated in very authentic Greek-style complete with Mediterranean waiters and oompa-style music.
The People
Its out of town position means that it is rarely full and buzzing. The Greek Taverna is the sort of place that, were it better located, would be filled with groups of hungry students and young professionals grabbing a quick feed on a night out.
Instead you'll find a mix of people who Googled 'Oxford and Greek' and a smattering of regulars. The service is ponderous at best and on the wrong night you might be forgiven for feeling like you are imposing on them.
The Food
The menu promises more than it delivers - an initial glance suggest a vast array of freshly cooked authentic Greek food at a reasonable price.
A wide range of appetisers such as tzatziki, spanakotiroboukes (Spinich and feta puffs) and halloumi are offered, along with the traditional pitta and dips (all priced at less than a fiver). Main courses are just as varied with items such as swordfish and kleftiko at around the £10 mark.
If you want to try lots of things without breaking the bank order the mezze at £16.95 a head. You'll certainly not be hungry after this barrage of food, but there is an overemphasis on dishes such as whitebait and squid which can leave you less than able to make inroads into the assorted grilled meats that come afterwards.
Vegetarians are well catered for at the Greek Taverna with a large selection of options including vegetable kebabs and a vegetable mousaka.
The Drink
A reasonable selection of wine which includes retsina, Greek beer and soft drinks.
The Last Word
If you're mob handed, hungry and not particularly discerning, the Greek Taverna is the place to go, otherwise save yourself a walk.
