Whilst the food was acceptable, it was overpriced, the time of day putting us off the a meal from the carvery. The staff seem to be constantly daydreaming and in spite of the fact that the place was only 1/3 full, they didn't seem to understand anything short of a baseball bat to the back of the head to get their attention.
Investing in a till that itemises the bill clearly would also be incredibly useful.
Would avoid in the future.
Booked a week before for Mothers Day. When we turned up we were told they had no record of our booking. We were told that there was no space in the restaurant and so we would have to eat in the bar. I asked if we would get any discount after they had messed our booking up and was told no. Customer service is very poor and food was not that good either, I will definitely not be returning to this pub
Had the Sunday carvery which was definitely worth the good price of £7.50. Had a bit of each of the 3 meats plus yorkshire, roast potatoes, great choice of veg, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce. Delicious and will definately be back again soon!
We went to the Evenlode because we had noticed that they offered a carvery and thought that we would try it because there are not many places offering carveries in the Oxford area and also because of the price - £4.50 in the weekday.
We were slightly concerned because of the negative reviews, but were very pleasantly surprised.
The carvery offered a choice of gammon, turkey and beef together with vegetables. It was excellent value for money and the meat was moist and not overcooked, and my husband and myself will be definately going there again and recommending it to friends and family alike for a good value english meal.
Possibly the worst food I've ever had in a pub. We were taken their after Eynsham Carnival & whilst it was understandably busy (though taking over an hour to get our meals ready is definitely slow in my book) & the waiting staff who brought it were nice enough, it was obvious that they were overrun and understaffed. The food, when it eventually arrived, was the lowest-quality pub food I've had. I mean, I'm used to heated-up cack in pubs and generally it doesn't bother me at all. This stuff, however, was of a lower standard than anything I've ever had before. Some of our number's meat wasn't cooked, the chips were soggy & tasted like the oil used to cook them had been around the block more times than Hugh Heffner. Even the peas managed to taste worse than the ones my school used to serve, which is a real achievement. My partner's macaroni cheese was grey and congealed & the salad was limp and tasteless. It wasn't a big surprise that at least two of our number had stomach problems for a couple of days after.
Whilst we were waiting for our meal, the kids had a go on the bouncy castle (somewhat precariously positioned on a slope) and after a few minutes on it, the thing managed to fold in on itself. Our kids were old enough to find it funny, but it can't have been much fun for the younger children, as several of them had to be pulled out. Afterwards, my daughter told me after that one of the swings had a nail sticking out of it, so we certainly weren't given the impression that this place is as safety conscious as it should be.
My overall impression is that this place is cutting financial costs instead of focusing on getting its quality up to an acceptable standard. Until they manage that, myself and the ten or so people I was with that night wouldn't consider going there again if you paid us.
Awful! Only ever come to this pub when it's quiet because they never have enough staff to cope with the busy rushes. We waited about an hour for our food and when we got it the lasagne was cold in the middle and our side orders never arrived until about 10 minutes in to the meal... Very badly organised. The waitresses were apologetic and very polite to us but the general manager had a face like a smacked arse. I don't think we'll be returning any more!
i recently went for a meal at the evenlode in eynsham. it was a sunday and was very busy however; the staff could not have made me more welcome and at ease. we had to wait for about 20mins for a table which was fine as the manager was friendly and asked us to have a drink and he would come collect us, when our table was free, the bar tender (Sophie) was a happy lady who greeted us with a smile. we all had a carvery at £7.50 which we were all very impressed with, the beef was cooked to perfection.
our waitress was a blonde lady who although busy was very atentive.
as we left the resturant the manager politley thanked us for coming and said hope to see you soon.
we certantly will be back! good food great staff and fantastic price.
The restaurant was unclean and looked like something out of a horror movie. The man at the carvery looked heartless and over worked. The food was rubbish. Most of my family complained because the meat was minimal and the vegetables didn't look very advertising. Have had burgers there before but looked like something you could throw in the microwave at home. The coke was too watery. It just looks like a place you would go if you were completely out of it and/or you couldn't be bothered to cook.
Outstanding - Went this evening for a carvery and it couldnt have been a more pleasant experience. Will be telling everyone about this. Fantastic price and great service all round. The chef on the carvery was a charming young man, very polite and the waitress helpful and professional. Food perfection. A* all round. Keep up the good work guys.
I went with my Gran on Saturday evening and we both had a carvery - choice of 3 meats, 3 veg plus potatoes and yorkshire. It was all very nice and the meat was tender and juicy. £4.50 on a saturday and deserts were mainlyu £3.95. Service was excellent and friendly. Def recommend to family and friends.
I have had several decent meals here but on a recent visit my family were treated so poorly by the manager that I would never return to this establishment. A child's burger was soaked in some sort of cleaning fluid which luckily we noticed after he had only taken a small bite. The waitress was very apologetic and exchanged this whilst taking it off the bill. Then when asked how our meals were one member of the family mentioned that a piece of chicken was visibly raw and after the waitress again apologising and offering an exchange of meal it was agreed that no further action was necessary as the meal had already been half eaten. the manager then approached our table and in an aggressive manner commented that the chicken was not undercooked and asked if taking all the meals from our bill would 'make us happy'. His aggressive manner upset the individual who had commented about the meal and made the whole atmosphere feel awkward. The waiting staff were fantastic and the rest of the meals were satisfactory but the managers attitude means that our family and friends will certainly never head to this restaurant again.

i was appointed to work in this pub only to be told 3 days after working that I was'nt 'switched on'. That's quite funny because I have worked in catering for several years when my daughters were little girls. I was more swithced on than some of the people working, I think it was age discrimination, and it will be reported...........

Maybe I've been spoilt but I wasn't impressed at all. My Parents came up form Wales and having read the reviews I thought I'd give this place a try the serving of meat was minimum and the trays of veg consisted of carrots, frozen Roasts, frozen Yorkshire's, and soggy cabbage. All of which were cold and I was left thinking I can't put to much veg on as there would be none left for my dad.
The Chef serving was quite miserable although the other staff were fine. The puddings on the other OK and at least hot.
As I said I've been spoilt because although the food is cheap the selection is poor and your left feeling hungry. Next Time I want a carvery I'll drive to Banbury. Yes its a drive but the food is just as cheap and your left satisfied by the well Know Pub chain of carvery's.
get irid of the so called manager i am not being nasty but he is not a manger nor is he a waiter of any kind he lets the evenlode down in a big way
i visited the evenlode on thursday night we had a carvery which was excelent and the chef on the carvery was very freindly and helpful i would like to say to everyone out there the food was great and very cheap go and see for yourself
Food was very good and can I just mention staff were good the man on the carvery was very helpful and dealt with me and my family very well his name was danny and is a asset to The Evenlode
I was greeted by a waiter who seemed to overwhelmed to talk to us at first and asked us to wait in the bar until a table was free.
He initially said it would take a couple of minutes but it turned into 45 and towards the end of the wait the kids were running about and unsettled.
By the time we had got to the table we were absolutely starving but had to wait another half an hour to get a waiter/waitress's attention.
They apologised for the wait but continued a slow service through out the meal. I think the quickest they moved was when we asked for the bill.
Overall the food was OK, I enjoyed the carvery with my husband and my children enjoyed the burger's but overall it was a long wait.
I understand that they were busy at 7 pm on a Friday but you would think that they would have the right amount of staff to cater for that time.
Personally I wouldn't recommend some one to go their but this was a couple of weeks after they first opened so hopefully they might of improved.
Impressed!!
Great food and extremely good value. 3 meals, 4 drinks for less than £17!
We chose the carvery, 3 choices of meat and 3 veg all excellently cooked on a weekday lunchtime for £4.50, plus the carvery for my toddler was free. They even had plastic kiddies plates.
The service wasn't excellent (inexperienced staff perhaps) but this was easily forgiven as the staff were so friendly and polite.
There were other, very minor issue's. The high chair we were given was ancient but it was safe. And there is no designated smoking area or ashtrays, so the garden area was littered with cigarette ends.
However I'm sure these things will be rectified over time and we will certainly be going back very soon!!
We went there this evening and were very disappointed as we really used to like this restaurant when it was part of the Beefeater chain. The service was good but the menu was limited - OK as long as you wanted chips with whatever you had - in my case vegetable samosas which seemed like an odd combination. The restaurant was empty by 8.45pm, so fine if you want to feed hungry children but not really the place for an adults evening out. The food was very cheap and I guess you get what you pay for.
We went there today for the Sunday Carvery.
We arrived at noon and was told that the carvery would be about 15 minutes. We had to wait quite a while to have our drinks order taken, even though we were only the second table occupied in the pub.
The young lad (didn't seem confident, or indeed that interested) took our food order (carvery) and we had to wait another 15 minutes before he came back to give us a raffle ticket to exchange for the food.
We were then told to go up and get our food, but it seemed along with several other tables and as we were the second table to arrive I was slightly miffed that people were ahead of us.
There was one person serving the meat, which was taking an unusual amount of time to carve. We waited in the line for about 10 minutes and the only plus side was the food. It was varied, fresh (although everything had been seasoned with a little bit too much salt for my liking) and you could help youself to the veg and spuds.
We ate our food and it took quite sometime for us to catch a members of staff attention to ask them to take away the plates, and for us to get the bill.
The girl said she "would be right back" and after 10 minutes she wasn't so we got up, left the money on the table and told her what we'd done when we were leaving. She was surprised that nobody had dealt with us.
I wouldn't recommend going back on a Sunday if the way it's run continues like it is. The staff could do with being a bit more on the ball, the carvery need a minimum of 2 people serving, and there needs to be someone permenantly at the front desk as I witnessed several customers stood there waiting to be seated.
If you're looking for a good value money mid-week (just under a fiver)meal then maybe the staff will be better equiped as I imagine it would be quieter.
This pub/restaurant has just reopened after a refurb and now comes under the Affordable Eating Company. (No neither have I!) The decor is bulk standard with a few nice touches here and there, such as the glass divide that opens up the dining area more. Food on this Sunday was a carvery, which was nice with several veg options. My only criticism would be that the meat portions were on the small side and veg was undercooked. However, service was friendly and honest and overall it was reasonable value for money. This Sunday was particularly busy as it's just reopened so booking is advisable.
Was served by someone that had a beautful accent here but she could hardly understand what i was saying which can get a littel frustrating, in the end we did get what we ordered but it took its time! I will go back as the food was good but maybe the service could do with a tweek.
