A gastropub, in a good setting on (a branch of) the Thames, with plenty of outside seating, and a play area for children. The beer is ok - Greene King IPA, plus, usually, a guest beer, always well kept. The food can be excellent, the devilled kidneys offered last autumn were outstanding. Unfortunately it can also be dismal - as experienced on two of my last three visits. One was a rare steak, served at room temperature; the other was a "dish of the day" pork steak, served rare, with blood running out of it. I have learned not to complain, you are too likely to get a snooty young man who claims "it is meant to be like that". And while the food is very variable, the prices are consistently on the high side.
Incidentally, the kitchens now close at 21:00, fair enough in itself, but there is no mention of this in their publicity material.
Visited The Fishes for the first time on the weekend and were pleasantly suprised; busy, congenial atmosphere; the food was way above standard pub fare and the service [a charming young Australian name of Jac] was great. Think we'll visit again, especially when the weather warms up - the outside eating area and the grounds are lovely [good for us dog people]
From the moment we walked into the empty restaurant at 12.15pm on Easter Monday to be told that we couldn't sit down then as we had booked at 1.00pm this didn't bode well.
Finally after arguing with the waiter who trotted out various conflicting reasons: the tables were all booked, the kitchen couldn't cope we were seated.
We ordered the lemon sole (ok) and then the roast lamb which you share. This arrived on a wooden platter looking lovely, several minutes later the plates arrived - irritating but not the end of the world.
We had been informed by the waiter (of the above) that the lamb was served pink. This hadn't seen pink for quite a while and the yorkshire puddings were cold.
The lamb was duly sent back to the kitchen to be replaced with pink, but stringy meat and warmer veg.
Overall the experience was not a pleasant one and certainly one of the worst meals I have experienced in my ten years of Oxford.
It's not just that the food was so bad, the greeting staff were so incredibly rude. No customer in today's credit crunch environment should be told when they can sit down to eat.
Owners of The Fishes sort out your front of house staff, the setting is beautiful and you could be onto a real winner. However with the current situation I doubt it
The Fishes has a fantastic atmosphere, big conservatory dining room with a deck for civilised otudoor dining. The massive garden is perfect on a summers day. Limited food in the garden, a selection of picnics and occasional BBQ's, however the food is all top quality and while portions can look small the taste is great and you actually don't need more than they serve.
I can't recommend it more highly
