The Perch has such a wonderful setting, it's a pity that the service is so bad.

We arrived there at 12:00 on a January day, and told them that we would like to have a pint or two and then some lunch. We were told that we would have to have our pints in the garden (ok, in a big marquee), and come in when we wanted to eat. We couldn't sit at a table to drink our pints as the tables (all empty, they had only just opened) were reserved for diners.

So we sat there drinking for a while, and then came in to take our table for lunch. But we were told that we could not do that, all the tables were now booked (though two thirds of them were still empty). So we had to leave without lunch.

I shan't be going back.

What a disappointment. My wife and I arrived for lunch and were shown to the terrace and given dinner menus. On enquiry the foreign waiter informed us that there is no separate lunch menu but lunch could be selected from a very rare (blue) beef salad, roasted Camembert or club sandwich. I asked if there was any other choice for a light meal: a burger for example. Apparently not available during the week. I ordered a club sandwich and my wife asked if the Salad Niçoise was also available as a main course as well as a starter. The food arrived within a short time and my wife’s salad was small but quite acceptable. The club sandwich however was more like a McDonald’s breakfast bun with a fried egg, a diminutive rasher of bacon, a sprig of lettuce and a shred of chicken all present in a double sliced floured bap. Oh, and the fries were from frozen – just like authentic McDonald’s. To add a rustic touch, it was served on a lump of wood. After the meal I asked for the bill but the Salad Niçoise quantity was indicated with x2 and the price was £13.90. The waiter confirmed that as a main course the price was doubled. I asked him to check if that was correct. A supervisor came to the table and confirmed that as the quantity of ingredients in the dish was doubled, so was the price. I pointed out that a guest on a neighbouring table had also ordered the Salad Niçoise which was very similar in size to my wife’s. The supervisor did not agree, but as both dishes had already been consumed there was nothing to compare. Although he apologised that the waiter should have confirmed with us that the price would be doubled for a main course, he said that the double price was justified as there was double the quantity. He did not take my point that the effort in preparation was certainly not double, nor was the waiter’s effort in carrying the dish to the table more strenuous. Sadly the only discount he could offer us was a 10% reduction on the salad or a complimentary coffee.

Awful place for cyclists.

They don't have anywhere safe for you to lock up a bicycle, and they throw you out if you try to lock your bikes up in their garden so you can ensure they aren't being stolen.

The foreign staff member who advised us of this ridiculous policy was rude and stuck up, so I won't be going there again. They lost out on 3 people who were planning on eating and drinking a great deal.

Sadly they don't seem to realise that being in the middle of nowhere and not allowing bikes in to their garden cuts their market phenomenally.

Went to The Perch last friday with my husband, expecting a lovely meal, how disappointed we were. The meal we had was poor, the portions miserly, and the drinks were very expensive. A nasty dinning experience. The staff were the only value for money.

A great big thank you to The Perch staff. We organised a surprise 40th wedding anniversary for our parents and all the staff were so helpful and kind, attending to all of our requirements.
Thanks to you all and see you very soon!

I visited the perch last Sunday (28th March) with 3 friends and enjoyed a truely magical experience. From the moment we entered the building we were treated to a genuinley warm welcome by the friendly and well presented staff. The decor and ambience was amazing and was commented on by all of our party!
The Manager was very helpful and talked us through the menus that were avaliable, either a lighter snacks menu, a full restaurant menu and a sunday roast..beef or chicken.
Being it was sunday, we all decided on the roast and were taken to our table in the delightful restaurant. We decided on 2 chicken and 2 beef. Our waiter described them in a very knowledgable and descriptive manner..and we were certainly not let down when the meals (promptly) arrived. Delicious!!
The waiter recommended our wines, to our specific tastes, from the new updated wine menu, and again we were delighted with his recommendations.
What was going to be a quick lunch turned into a wonderful and relaxing afternoon with great food and wine in beautiful surroundings.
We'll be back!!

We just had the most fabulous Sunday lunch at the Perch. How nice to see that this staple of Oxford's pub scene has been restored with such care.
The garden looks terrific with its display of spring flowers and the inside of the pub is absolutely charming.
More a restaurant than a pub these days, it still accommodates for punters and walkers, which we are part of.
We hadn't booked a table and the place was absolutely full and buzzing. We enquired about getting a table without much hope, but were told that if we were happy to have a drink and wait 20minutes, they should be able to sit us down.
We decided to wait and were soon escorted to a lovely table with views of the garden. The staff were very helpful and well mannered. All our questions and requirements were answered gracefully.
We even had the choice of 2 roasts, a traditional roast beef, served deliciously rare, and what we were told is a French tradition, the poulet roti! We tried one of each and both were equally as good. Simple, honest food, beautifully presented. I just wish we had kept room for pudding...as is suggested on the menu!
We will definitely go back to The Perch.

What a disappointing food and customer service experience! This is an olde style, quaint little pub on the outskirts of Oxford, but don't be fooled. We visited the Perch a few weeks ago for Sunday lunch. Upon arrival we were told that there was a wait for our table and were left in the bar area for around an hour, where the staff made us feel unwelcome and in the way. I don't think I remember seeing any of the staff smile, not even once. Once at our table we ordered our food, but were not offered drinks. We we told that we had to go to the bar to get them. When our food arrived 30 mins later it was lukewarm and very disappointing, especially after an hour and a half wait!

Rude, disgraceful manners, very poor service. One to avoid.

My close friend had excitedly planned for weeks to use this venue as a secret get-together for 15 friends. He had planned to go on a local walk with his girlfriend and pop the question; the newly engaged couple were then to retire to the Perch where the rest of us would be waiting to surprise her. 2 weeks earlier, he had booked a table for 15 for 3pm, but due to people being able to rearrange work commitments, a table for 17 was needed. Not a problem you would have thought, close friend can easily squeeze an extra 2 onto a table of this size. It did however, take 45 minutes before we were shown through.

What followed on couldn't have been more disappointing. The obviously very excited fiancee was told to keep quiet, initially by a pleasant waitress, however, just as the food arrived, late and lukewarm, the Manageress threatened everyone who wasn't eating a main course to leave and move into the bar. This accounted for 4 people; incidentally, they were waiting to have pudding, not that this was asked. She was even rude enough to say to the fiance that he had 2 options, up and leave, but still pay the bill as they had his credit card, or sit down and shut up. With no choice, we opted to eat our meal.

The owner then arrived. By now the happy couple were just trying to eat their meal and make the most of their special day. My friend asked if he could speak to him after they'd finished; the owner said that would be okay, just tell the Manageress and she would go and get him.

After eating we paid up, minus tip, and requested to see the owner. The Manageress who must now have realised how disgraceful her behaviour had been, refused to allow us to see the owner. I can only hope she is ashamed of herself, but going by her behaviour I'd be surprised.

We walked to the White House Pub, 10 mins away, and they were fantastic. We all manged to have our puddings and champagne in a friendly en

Awful service, staff were rude and unhelpful. Food mediocre and not worth the premium. We booked a table for 15 to celebrate an engagement. The final number was 17 - initially, the manager was accommodating. After waiting 45 minutes for our pre-booked table to be made ready (minus cutlery, glasses, water jugs. Everything but the napkins, really) we sat down. We waited another half hour to have any attention from the polite but obviously overworked waitress (this was a normal Sunday afternoon, not particularly busy). We weren't offered drinks.

Orders in - another half hour wait - no problem - we chatted as old friends do. The waitress asked us to be quiet. We certainly were not being particularly noisy, as much as you would expect a table of 17 to be. Other tables had families with boisterous children. We quietened down meekly. Food arrives, cold, along with the manager, who abruptly told us to 'shut up or you will have to move to the bar' - some of our party weren't eating, she wanted those 4 people to wait at the bar. Odd, surely? After some disheartened debate with the couple who were supposed to be celebrating their engagement, we decided to do as she asked, so 4 of our party waited in the bar for us to finish our meal. We all wanted desert though - the manager refused to allow them to stay. No explanation given, very surly and rude.

We asked to speak to the owner, who duly came downstairs. As we were, by this time, eating our food before it got any cooler, we politely asked the owner if we could finish our meal before voicing our concerns. 'of course - just ask for me'. However, the rude manager insisted he not be disturbed on his 'day off', 'you don't have a choice but to speak to me'. Extremely confrontational and rude, this was obviously distressing to the 'happy couple'. We paid up and left for a nearby pub - 'the White House' - very nice, duly had our longed for puddings and champagne, and alas! We didn't get asked to

Was at the Perch recently for a very special family occasion which had been booked for a long time and feel completely let down and utterly disappointed!

The service was awful as was the food but I will get onto that later...It was for my grandparents 60th wedding anniversay and we had told the staff this previously yet from the moment we walked in they made no effort to make us feel welcome.

To start, we were told that both the white and the red wines we ordered were not available, no apology was given, just a shrug of the shoulders to tell us to get on with it.

So, we decided to sit back for a while and take in the atmosphere while we waited for our drinks, only to hear christmas music playing in the background!

I love christmas but over 3 months away from christmas I thought this was ridiculous and only added to their couldn't care less attitude, I assume no-one had checked!

When the wines did arrive, they poured a glass for us each and for the rest of the meal my father had to act as waiter as no effort was made to top up our glasses, shocking when you look at the prices they charge.

We were a big party and everyone seemed ok about their starters, however the mains were awful. Some people had the steak and at paying over £16 for it you'd expect it to be edible. My boyfriend is not a fussy eater unyet he was unable to finish it.

Chewy and tasteless were the words used. Many of us had the shellfish, some of which had to be sent back as none of the shells were open! Once i got round to tasting them it tasted like a bit of seafood in water! When we got round to cutting the cake, we had to use napkins to hand it out at first as no plated were given.

It was my grandparents special day and would have at least expected the staff to wish them a happy anniversary or perhaps give them a glass of bubbly to make up for their inept performance but nothing was forthcoming.

Great food, good atmosphere, nicely tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Food is a little pricey but worth it for a good dining experience
